What is Gas Transfer / Diffusing Capacity (DLCO)?

Commonly used to identify issues that affect the efficiency of gas exchange between the lungs and the bloodstream. Helps diagnose and manage diseases such as Pulmonary Fibrosis and Pulmonary Hypertension. 

 

Explanation   

Evaluates how effectively oxygen passes from the alveoli in your lungs into your pulmonary capillaries and bloodstream.

How it is performed: 

​

1. You breathe normally through the mouthpiece for a few relaxed breaths.

2. You exhale fully to empty your lungs. 

3. You take a swift, maximum inhalation of a harmless test gas mixture containing trace amounts of carbon monoxide (0.3%) and a tracer gas (like helium or methane). 

4. You hold your breath for 10 seconds. 

5. You exhale smoothly and completely into the system, which analyzes the concentration of expired gas to measure how much carbon monoxide was absorbed by your blood.
